Cybersecurity for NDIS, aged care and allied health: the Essential Eight starter
Start with a Security Health Check against the Essential Eight, the security baseline from the Australian Signals Directorate. For most care providers the first wins are multi factor authentication, patching, tested backups and a review of who has access. It gives you a plain fix list, ordered by what matters most.
Care providers hold some of the most sensitive data there is. Health information, funding details, home addresses, worker records. That makes you a target, and it makes a breach far more than an IT problem. It is a trust problem, a funding problem and a regulator problem.
The good news is that most breaches use simple gaps, and most gaps have simple fixes. You do not need an enterprise budget. You need to start.
Start with a Security Health Check
The first engagement for almost every provider is a Security Health Check. It reviews your systems, accounts, devices and backups against the Essential Eight, the baseline published by the Australian Signals Directorate. You get a plain English report on where you sit today, what is exposed, and a fix list ordered by what matters most, not by what is easiest to sell you.
The four fixes that matter most
- Multi factor authentication. The single most effective control. Turn it on for every account, especially administrators.
- Patching. Keep systems and devices updated. Most attacks use known holes that a patch already closed.
- Tested backups. Not just backups, but a restore you have actually tested. Assume you will need it.
- Access review. Remove dormant accounts and old admin access. People leave; their logins should too.
None of these are exotic. They are the difference between a scare and a disaster.
The email fraud you will actually see
Invoice fraud is the attack most care providers meet first. Someone sends an email that looks like it came from your organisation, and a payment goes to the wrong account. The fix is three email authentication records, an audit of who sends mail as you, and a simple payment verification step for your finance team. It is often a one to three day job and it stops a very expensive mistake.
Security has to include your AI
If you are adding AI and automation, security is part of that plan, not an afterthought. New workflows should have clear data access, logging and human approval, and participant data should be minimised before it reaches any AI tool.
Where LYD Assist fits
We work alongside your existing IT, during Australian business hours, on defined assessment, hardening and remediation. We are not a helpdesk and we do not pretend to be an incident response firm. We do the preparation and the gap work so you pass the questions insurers, auditors and the Commission ask. See the full cybersecurity and secure AI service.
